Insect pest data: supporting informed pest management
6 June 2025
An archive of more than 50,000 labelled pest images from UK farms — supplemented by over 300,000 historical pest images from Chinese farms — that underpins our pest identification models.
At Mutus Tech, detailed pest data is essential for understanding and managing agricultural challenges in a targeted, environmentally responsible way. Our datasets form the foundation of pest monitoring, detection and management within our precision agriculture work.
Data archive
We maintain an archive of more than 50,000 labelled insect pest images collected from farms in the UK. The images cover a range of economically important pests — including aphids, weevils and leaf miners — and are updated regularly through ongoing field surveys. The archive also includes more than 300,000 historical pest images from farms in China, providing a broader dataset for comparative analysis.
Applications
The datasets support the development and testing of AI models used in pest identification and quantification. Training models on high-quality, field-based imagery is intended to improve their accuracy and suitability for the practical conditions farmers face.
Ongoing research
The pest image datasets contribute to research collaborations with agricultural institutions and inform the development of Integrated Pest Management strategies. The work supports more precise, data-driven decision-making in farming.
Sample data
For those interested in reviewing the structure and content of the pest data archive, a small sample dataset — including a selection of labelled pest images and associated metadata — is available. Please contact us for access.
