Pezego launches AI-powered pest identification and climate-smart management tool

24 March 2025

Pezego — co-developed by Mutus Tech, RSK ADAS, the University of Sheffield and the University of Liverpool — is now available on iOS and Android, providing real-time pest identification and IPM guidance.

Liverpool, 17 February 2025 — Pezego, an AI-powered tool co-developed by Mutus Tech, RSK ADAS, the University of Sheffield and the University of Liverpool, is now available on iOS and Android. Pezego provides farmers and agronomists with real-time pest identification and climate-smart management guidance, supporting more sustainable, evidence-based pest management.

A research-backed tool for Integrated Pest Management

Pezego’s pest identification model — developed by Prof. Po Yang’s research team at the University of Sheffield — recognises the key insect species affecting UK cereal crops in the field. It was trained on a two-year dataset collected from more than 20 farms across England, with over 10,000 high-resolution, expertly annotated images and 300 minutes of video footage, alongside multimodal inputs covering crop varieties, regional agricultural conditions and climate signals.

Beyond identification, Pezego incorporates an expert system co-developed with the University of Liverpool and ADAS. By combining large language model techniques with domain expertise and authoritative sources, the system provides climate-smart decision support for 38 major pests — including cabbage stem flea beetle, grain aphids and peach-potato aphids — across 10 field crops, such as cereals, oilseeds and potatoes.

By combining AI-enabled detection with agronomic intelligence, Pezego is designed to support Integrated Pest Management (IPM), helping farmers make more informed decisions, target inputs more carefully and adopt practices consistent with sustainable, resilient farming.

The Pezego demo video on YouTube highlights the app’s AI-enabled pest detection and climate-smart management features, showing how it supports more informed pest management decisions in the field.

Key features

  • Real-time pest identification — identify field pests quickly using on-device AI.
  • Climate- and region-specific recommendations — receive tailored pest management advice, supported by a large language model and authoritative sources.
  • Offline capability for rural areas — provides pest identification and management guidance where internet connectivity is limited.

Reaction

“Pezego is the result of a remarkable collaboration between industry leaders and academic experts,” said Dr Qing Xue, Director of Product Management at Mutus Tech. “By combining advanced AI with deep agricultural knowledge, we have built a tool that helps farmers make more informed, sustainable decisions for their crops and the environment.”

Since launch, Pezego is being adopted by farmers and agronomists across the UK, and the user base has begun to extend to India, China, Argentina and Brazil.
