Mutus Tech delivers Pezego field training for Extension Officers in Ghana

Working with partners including the University of Sheffield and the University of Ghana, Mutus Tech delivered hands-on Pezego training for Extension Service Officers at the Ejura Agricultural Station — an early step towards scaling AI-assisted pest surveillance across the Ashanti region.

Mutus Tech has delivered an interactive, in-person training session on the Pezego Mobile App for Extension Service Officers (ESOs) at the Ejura Agricultural Station in Ghana.

The training was delivered by Mutus Tech in collaboration with its project partners — the research team led by Prof. Po Yang at the University of Sheffield, the University of Ghana, and Ghana’s agricultural authorities, including the Ejura Agriculture Directorate.

The workshop was organised and led together with Prof. Benedicta Yayra Fosu-Mensah and Amoako Ofori of the University of Ghana, alongside the local training team at the Ejura Agriculture Directorate — Mohammed Sulemana, Kingsley Adisu Emmanuel, and Ben Leo Addah, Agricultural Director.

A hands-on introduction to Pezego

Extension Service Officers worked directly with the latest build of the Pezego Mobile App, developed by Mutus Tech, putting each part of the field workflow into practice:

  • App walkthrough — officers registered, configured their profiles and learned how to track their impact milestones within the app.
  • AI with human verification — officers practised using the AI-powered pest detection tool, learning to verify, modify or manually enter pest identifications to ensure high-accuracy diagnostic advice.
  • Logging rich field context — officers captured detailed environmental data, including crop growth stage, damage severity and field photos, with GPS-linked climate data recorded automatically.
  • A new community forum — we introduced Pezego’s new role-protected, ESO-only community forum, where officers can share field insights, ask questions and attach real-time field records, with sensitive farmer details automatically redacted to protect privacy.

Looking ahead

The next step is to deliver hands-on training workshops for local farmers, completing the digital loop between field officers, AI-enabled support and smallholders.

Over the coming months, Mutus Tech aims to scale the deployment of the Pezego app across the Ashanti region, while continuing to work with the Plant Protection and Regulatory Services Directorate (PPRSD) to establish national-level crop pest monitoring and data-driven surveillance systems in Ghana.
